Title: Presentation Zen
Read: Summer 2008
Format: hard copy

  • Introduction: Presenting in Today's World
  • Preparation: Creativity, Limitations, and Constraints; Planning Analog; Crafting the Story
  • Design: Simplicity - Why It Matters; Presentation Design - Principles and Techniques; Sample Slides
  • Delivery: The Art of Being Completely Present; Connecting With an Audience
  • The Next Step: The Journey Begins
This book follows the course of dozens of others arguing that bullet points are ineffective. It departs from others slightly by quoting other authors including Edward Tufte. Garr suggests that "slideware" is a name for presentation tools. I've always used "slideware" to mean software that exists in PowerPoint only.

His tips include simplify, emphasize, don't clutter, and to use pathos through images. He promotes stock photo sites, the 3x3 grid for layout, and a separate handout based on a document model rather than a slide model. He pushes for us to tell stories. Here are some of his re-works.
