Title: The Art of Innovation
Read: Fall 2007
Format: Text
Reviewer: bek

This book was written all the way back in 2001. I mention that because the current business literature is flooded with references to innovation aribtrage. In Innovation Nation, the authors argue that talent and capital have gone borderless and that the US needs to take steps to regain leadership in creative thinking. The current issue of CIO Magazine is about getting innovation deliverables out of our outsourcing arrangments. IBM is running a commerical about Innovation Man and the need to execute (www.ibm.com/do). In short, "innovation" is one of the vogue topics in business books.

Kiley is related to one of the principles at IDEO. As such, he has an insiders view on how IDEO has built a business on innovation. The tips of the book can mostly be summarized as:

  • watch customers and non customers, especially enthusiasts
  • play with the physical workplace
  • think verbs and not nouns
  • break rules and fail forward so that change is part of culture
  • stay human, scaling organization environment to support hot groups and neighborhoods
  • build bridges from one department to another, from company to customer, and from now into the future
