Ms. Smith provides details on the role of the fact checker and their purpose in the American free press. The fact checker forms a triangle between the editor and the author. Many times the fact checker is the gate keeper. Ms. Smith gives some practical tips for anyone by reminding us to be skeptical, but not cynical. Most of the book is geared for new entrants in the field and talks about the softer side of the relationship with authors and editors. I found the book interesting, but without enough examples to show the subtleties of fact checking. Ms. Smith closes with a section of reference material for books, magazines, and web sites that can be useful for checking facts. I've recreated the web sites below.
