Title: Picnics
Read: Summer 2007
Format: Text
Reviewer: bek

This is a book striving to evoke a feeling - a feeling about picnics. They have lots of compelling photos and even some pages devoted to picnic-like facts. I found the material too thin. The proposed menus don't include all recipes and are geared towards buying a lot of the ingredients. The very nature of the picnic is extended to include meals on an airplane and outdoor dinners. I would have ended up dismissing this book as a junior coffee-table book, and then I stumbled on this recipe for grilled banana bread, with grilled pineapple, and vanilla ice cream. If this recipe turns out, it may just save this book. Careful readers will realize that the stylized food picture doesn't really depict the recipe (both the bread and the pineapple are clearly grilled, but the recipe suggests more of a sautee and even dicing for the pineapple), but creatively combining both ideas may result in a better recipe.
