OSX Finder Folder Action for SCP
I seem to be getting lazier. I'm tired of scp'ing from the command line. I'm not interested in the excellent, but tedious Fugu. So I decided to automate my operating system with another Folder Action. I turned to Apple's OttO the Automator because I can dog-paddle in AppleScript, but I really don't like the temperature of the water. There are some other neat user-space SSH drive mounts, but the project is early, my OS is mostly stable, and I didn't want to bother with more odd guest file systems (iDisk).

  1. First, make sure you can login without using your password by exchanging SSH keys.

Follow this http://www.oreilly.com/pub/h/66 article if you need help with keys.

Remember, you can use ssh with -i to specify your keys if you need to.

  2. Next, set up Automator. I tried to download the "SCP Action" that seems to be the only Automator SCP "hit" on various sites, but I couldn't get it to work. So, I just dragged in the "Script Action". This Automator action is pretty simple.
  3. Save this as a Plug-In by following the menu.
  4. Find your folder. You are now ready to drag and drop to this folder. The OS and Automator keep track of the existing files, so you really don't even have to do cleanup.
  5. You could nest file folders and change the script slightly to have folder actions to different host servers.
